If you've been following our blog, you may have noticed that we've been announcing new limited edition coffees just about every month. Sourcing new coffees is usually a pretty time consuming venture, but Richard just keeps finding these gems, so, we're going to keep sharing our latest and greatest with you. This month, we have a brand new Sumatra LTD available. It is our pleasure to introduce you to Sumatra Bener Meriah.

A short hop, skip, and jump Southeast from the southernmost tip of India, and really just a stumble from the southernmost tip of Malaysia, brings you to the island of Sumatra, the largest island in Indonesia. A collection of self-governing provinces, Sumatra is about 1000 miles from end to end and just under 300 miles across at its widest point. One of Sumatra's more well-known provinces, Aceh, is the birthplace of our featured coffee. Aceh, located at the northernmost tip of Sumatra is a very mountainous area, with peaks around 10,000 feet above sea level. As we know, a tropical climate and mountains make up the preferred growing conditions for coffee.

Unlike other coffee producing regions, Sumatran farmers predominantly utilize a wet-hulled process, or semi-washed process, to dry their coveted beans. In this process, most of the coffee fruit is stripped from the bean, allowed to ferment slightly, then the rest is of the remaining fruit is removed before finally allowing the naked beans to dry thoroughly. For more information on this and other common processes, click here.

In the cup, you can enjoy a full-bodied, earthy coffee that is remarkably low in acidity, as is typical of most Sumatran coffees. As one might expect from a Limited Edition coffee, Sumatra Bener Meriah adds a little something else to the cup. You'll notice a delicate herbal note, not unlike sage, followed by a very unusual pop of brightness, with a distinct cocoa finish. We roast this coffee to a full-city medium specifically to enhance the unique characteristics of this coffee.

The newest member of our Central Market Limited Edition Series, you'll find Sumatra Bener Meriah in most Central Market locations, however, supplies vary depending on the location. So, it would be a good idea to phone ahead first to make sure your neighborhood Central Market has a supply. Of course, feel free to order from our website, if it's more convenient, or stop by our retail front. We'd love to see you!
