Rafael Silvas is the current owner of Divina Providencia. In a recent interview with our coffee broker, Señor Silvas spoke of his beloved mother having passed it down to him. Eve Thelma Hoff, used to "walk (the) farm every afternoon." Referring to the farm as "one of her babies," it's clear that she felt a strong sense of responsibility toward her family by way of taking "an immense care (of) this property." But it's not just love and family that coddles this high quality coffee to the cup. This particular area actually has nature backing it up too.

Sitting at 1450 masl, afternoon fog settles in the low-lying areas of Divina Providencia every day. This farm is cradled in the typography, with rich clay-loam soils, and ample annual rainfall; it's shielded from gusting winds and beating rays of the sun. This "micro-climate" is very unique. One might say the Silvas family has been blessed by the coffee gods.

Divina Providencia used to produce bourbon (pronounced burr-bone) varietals exclusively. But in recent years, several Pacas trees have been spontaneously making their appearance. These trees are a natural mutation of the bourbon trees which produce shorter plants, but with a much higher yield at harvest.

All the coffee on the farm is hand-picked and milled right on the plantation, enabling the Silvas' to maintain a tighter grip on quality control than other coffee producers. This may have had something to do with Divina Providencia winning the El Salvador Cup of Excellence Auction not too long ago.
