At 4500 feet above sea level, overlooking the highest peak (Mullayanagiri) in the mountains of Chikmagalur, is the Balekola estate. There they grow 100% of the coffee in the natural shade canopy maintaining habitat for a large variety of wildlife. In that shade canopy they also grow pepper, cardamom, arecanut, and fruit trees like oranges, mango, and bananas.
The estate’s efforts at sustainability go beyond their growing methods. Some of the buildings at Balekola have recently been outfitted with solar panels. This has reduced energy consumption and can act as a backup power during outages. The highest energy usage is during the picking season, to run the pulping equipment. As time goes on, they plan on adding as many panels as they can to help offset this cost.
Bean preparation is done to a very high level, befitting a premium estate coffee. The result is a brew that is medium-bodied and clean, with an intriguing taste of spice, perhaps from being grown with the pepper and cardamom
We have enjoyed working with the family that owns the estate, and are proud to help support these farmers who happen to grow great coffee. We have a small amount of the India Chickmagalur Balekola Estate on hand, and if we get the response we expect, we will bring in a lot more. We'd love for you to try our newest discovery.
