Sumatra Takengon Sara Ate LTD

Believe it or not, it's time for another Limited Edition swap. This time, we've got a brand new Indonesian coffee out of Sumatra's famous Aceh region. Get ready for this one, it hits all the right notes!

High in the hills of Takengon, along the westernmost point of Sumatra, live the Gayo people. Their presence in these hills can be traced back almost a thousand years, so it's no surprise that traditions run deep in these parts. This region produces world renowned coffee profiles while maintaining traditional coffee cultivation techniques and processes native to the area.

The Sara Ate Cooperative has over 500 local members, many of whom are women supporting their families. Hardly any of these members have more than three acres dedicated to coffee production.

They sort and mill their own coffee. Locally called " Giling Basah," this wet-hulling process begins with small micro-mills that depulp the coffee. It's then spread out to ferment overnight. Next, the coffee is stripped bare while the beans still have a high water content, exposing the bean while it dries for the next few weeks. Once the coffee is sufficiently dry, Sara Ate Coop handles the arrangements from transportation to warehouse to export.

We are enamored with this coffee. Comforting vanilla and hazelnut notes make for a smooth palate-pleaser. Many folks assume that coffee from Sumatra is always roasted dark, but not so! We've roasted to Full-City medium to preserve the nuances that make these coffees so fun to discover. Did we mention it's also certified Fair Trade Organic? And it's delightfully low in acidity. We tried Chemex, French press, drip, and espresso. All of them were delicious, especially when paired with milk products. You really can't go wrong with this one.
